Second Chance Education (SCE) is educational and employment supportive non-profit organization with 501(C)(3) certifications from IRS. SCE is ONE out of SEVEN institutions in California that are federally funded by the United States Department of Education in 2022 for Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) TRiO (Learn more). The CA Department of Education also funds the SCE for WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act). The SCE also is approved vendor by the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR). We are dedicated to preparing individuals including those who have disabilities (training assistive technology), veterans, refugees, etc. for workplaces and helping them in finding suitable and stable jobs. We are a group of educators, researchers, multilingual teachers, trainers, and professionals passionate about helping underserved populations, which include veterans, disabled and marginalized adults, refugees, and immigrants in the United States. We consider this a giving back to our community because most of us have tasted what it's like to be underserved, marginalized, or immigrants to the U.S. and have had our own struggles in blending in. We understand the struggles and challenges, especially when it comes to improving life skills and pursuing dreams. Anyone could become underserved for any reason. People are raised in different environments, and elements of an environment play a significant role in determining a person's personality and behavior and equipping them with enough skills and knowledge to survive in society. Society’s obligation is to participate in creating an inclusive environment regardless of gender, religion, sex, language, culture, or disability. Our duty is to promote equality in the services we provide for everyone and give people the opportunity to grow and give back to their own communities.
Many research supports that the rate of return on education is the highest in comparison to any other investment. SCE is committed to enabling the underserved population registered with us to have equal access to educational opportunities.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, over 70% of college students are nontraditional. Factors such as surrounding (environment), age, enrollment status, and work status play a significant role in these statistics. All elements are associated to challenges that are a part of our routine life. They are related to life balance, work, finances, social and cultural connections, disabilities, and many more components. Challenges create barriers, and many people suffer because facing and dealing with those obstacles hold them back from pursuing their educational and employment goals. Understanding and addressing those barriers are vital, as they affect individuals’ stress levels, satisfaction, and overall well-being. The cost and consequences of ignoring or misleading, or marginalizing them for society may become a disaster in the long run. Our WHY is the best justification for our existence and motivation for our members and partners to pursue our journey.

Welcome Veterans
"Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history. At least 108 million people were killed in wars in the twentieth century. Estimates for the total number killed in wars throughout human history range from 150 million to 1 billion. Jul 6, 2003," according to this article. The United States has been at war for 222 out of 238 years. Battles may not be wanted, but they happen. They impact our economy, society, culture, and most importantly the lives of many Americans.
Those who go to war for us are heroes regardless of the consequences of the battle. They defend our country, people, beliefs, culture, and values. Imagine a hypothetical situation when you sign some checks without any dollar amounts on them and give them to someone you trust to spend any way, anywhere, and anyhow they like. Veterans did that. Their "signature" on the check is their "life." The people are those who write the amount and the location for it to be cashed. Veterans put their lives into our hands for our security. They created the opportunity for us to live safely and securely, raise our families, become educated, get a job, and have a better future. What we have gained is what they lost on the battlefield. Now, it is our obligation and duty to help them reinstate the time, opportunity, and life that they have given to us.
Serving our heroes is one of Second Chance's priorities. We will try our best to create a Second Chance for our veterans to gain the opportunities they have lost. Second Chance welcomes veterans, and we would be delighted to serve them.

Refugees
Many refugee parents who left their countries because of war or insecurity, cannot participate in their children’s school life due to language barriers and it endangers the social health of the family. We deeply honor everyone’s culture and traditions. Our ambition is to break down barriers and weave the unique immigrant cultures into modern American society, so that everyone is included and accepted, regardless of their beliefs, race, ethnicity, language, culture, and sexual orientation.
The majority of our team members are fluent in multiple languages and have experienced many barriers themselves. We all learned English as a second language. The path that we have been walking as ESL learners was a bumpy road, full of obstacles, misunderstandings, and misinterpretation. Now that we have seen the results of not giving up, being persist in school, and advancing our skills, we strive to share our experience with individuals seeking to improve their lives. We have found an opportunity to use our experience and specialties, to share them with refugees and adults to encourage them to pursue an education. We can enlighten the areas that many adult learners might be fearful of taking on. We have equipped ourselves with the tools, knowledge, experience, and expertise to help those who started or want to start the path we walked years ago and now can help our neighbor immigrants to become active citizens as taxpayers, homeowners, or even business owners, participating in making a better and safer society for all of us.
